The AMP (Al Mega Podcast) – Matt Shoup

In this episode of the Al Mega Podcast, host Al Mega interviews serial entrepreneur, author, and keynote speaker Matt Shoup. Matt reveals that he grew up in New Jersey and then moved to Colorado when he was ten. He tells Al Mega that he was bullied a lot and ran with a group of kids that are now either dead, in prison, or missing. Growing up, Shop reveals that he found solace in the WWF Pro Wrestling and that it was his escape from the harsh realities of his life. Al Mega and Matt Shoup then discuss Shoup’s business ventures and his journey to success as an entrepreneur. They delve into the challenges Shoup faced as an entrepreneur, and the secrets to his perseverance and determination. They also explore the importance of dreaming big and making goals a reality. Finally, they discuss the importance of staying motivated and the journey, which may not always be easy, but is always purposeful.

Chris Arie and the speaker were childhood friends who would talk about Saturday morning cartoons at school on Monday. The speaker was labeled a troublemaker due to his inability to stay focused and was often bullied in both New Jersey and Colorado. In order to avoid the bullying, he turned to business as an escape and a way to make money, eventually leading to a career in entrepreneurship and public speaking. At the age of 26, he took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and eventually earned a black belt.

Matt recounts how he developed a sense of purpose and certainty in response to bullying he experienced in his life. He began lifting weights and posturing up when he felt threatened. One weekend, he was out drinking with a group of friends when he said the wrong thing to the wrong guys and got jumped down in Denver. His future father-in-law suggested he learn how to fight to protect his daughter, so he walked into a Jiu Jitsu gym 16 years ago. He was a 200 pound meathead with a lot of ego, and they told him to throw a kid down and choke him. Despite his confidence, the kid took control and repeatedly made him cry uncle.

Matt talks about his introduction to entrepreneurship at the age of 10 when his parents told him he had to figure out how to make money if he wanted something, which he did. After high school, he got recruited by a painting company and made six figures over four years of college. During that time, he spent more than he made, so he decided to get a nine to five job as a mortgage loan officer, but that didn’t last long. He was fired the morning he met the new bank president. He then took a semester in Spain to learn Spanish and got back into the painting business. Chad shares his story to kids today, giving them the tools he wishes he had as a child.

Highlights

And then I never wanted to have a coffee shop. Somebody said, well, how much is it? I said it’s free. We just want to love on you and hang out and share something I love. And he goes, well, do something with this $20. And he throws $20 in this cup that I drank beer out of at the bar in Spain. I had it up as it’s a nice looking cup. And I’m like I go, you know what we could do? We could take all that money and give it to the scholarship that we have. We started a scholarship at CSU to send students to Spain. So if you go back to the website, there the Matshop.com. So cafe sevilla. It exists to show love to others by sharing coffee with them.
Matukave. He says, so I so I drink the coffee, and then, you know, 30 minutes later to the bathroom. But so cate conley che. It’s just it’s a couple shots of espresso, some steamed whole milk. It’s in between a cortado and a latte, right? So from the ratio of milk to coffee. So I love just sharing Spanish culture. I cook paella dinners for family, for friends. And every time I go to Spain, I bring a suitcase full of coffee back to share with my friends and drink myself.
No, it was well, it was funny because the publishing company that I worked with said, hey, when you do your audible, here’s a list of voice actors, take a listen to some samples of them. And I go, I’m not letting a voice actor read my book. It’s my book I have so much respect for. I don’t know if you’ve heard of mike mcallowicks. He’s a very successful, well known business author. He’s become a great friend of mine, but he reads his own books, and I know mike. So you read his book, you listen to the audible, you get the whole experience of mike 50 cent.
This guy just closed the biggest deal that I’ve ever done because I shared when I screwed up. So then I went and I tested and experimented sharing this story, and then I went out and interviewed lots of business owners that have done the same. So this book is a process about how to tell a story, why you should tell your story, and why you should tell your imperfect story, and then how to actually capture, craft, and communicate that message.
So I told him, and he’s engaged. And he said, what did you do? He goes, that’s a real bad day. So he said, what did you do about it? I told him how we handled it, and he goes, you’re the kind of guy I want to do business with. Shook my hands, signed a deal that was 20 times the size of my average deal at the time, and it was a game changer for the business. So I said hold on. We’re taught to feature, benefit a plus five star shiny marketing brochure and paint this picture of perfection.
